St. Simon School Hosts VexIQ NorCal Robotics Competition

Saint Simon Parish School Hosts VexIQ NorCal Robotics Competition Los Altos, CA - Saint Simon Parish School hosted the St. Simon VexIQ NorCal Qualifier at the Computer History Museum’s Hahn Auditorium in Mountain View on Saturday, February 14.

The competition hosted over thirty teams from eight different robotics programs across California. Six round-robin matches per team were completed, followed by final-pairings to determine the overall winners of the Teamwork Challenge. Five qualifying spots to the state championship were awarded to teams who will go on to participate in the Northern California VexIQ State Championships, scheduled for March 7, 2015 at Willow Glen High School in San Jose. Winners from state competitions compete in the VexIQ World Championships, scheduled for April 15-18 in Louisville, Kentucky.

“For our first event, the turnout could not have been better”, said Saint Simon Principal Steve Rummell. “The Computer History Museum is recognized as one of the world’s leading institutions for the preservation and celebration of the valley’s computer history, and provided the perfect backdrop for students interested in expanding their knowledge in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.”

Participating teams included: Sacred Heart School, Willow Glen Middle School, Saint Simon Parish School, Sandpiper Elementary, The Quarry Lane School, St. Mary’s School in Los Gatos, Branch Elementary, and the Castillero Education Foundation.

The following teams received awards: Quarry Lane School (Teamwork Champion Award, Teamwork Finalist Award, Robot Skills Champion Award); Saint Simon Parish School (Excellence Award, Elementary School Excellence Award, Teamwork Champion Award, Programming Skills Second Place, Robot Skills Second Place, Design Award); Sandpiper Elementary School (Programming Skills Champion Award, STEM Research Project Award); Willow Glen Middle School (Teamwork Finalist Award). In addition, teams from Saint Simon, Quarry Lane, Willow Glen, and Sandpiper Elementary qualified for the Northern California Vex IQ State Championship.
