Bone Marrow Drives for Monique Larson
On December 17, 2007 Monique Larson, an active parishioner of Saint Simon church and school, was diagnosed with leukemia. She has spent the past year undergoing chemotherapy at Stanford hospital. The Doctors have determined that Monique’s only hope is a bone marrow transplant. Monique does not have any siblings and has a unique heritage of both Native American and German making it very difficult to find a bone marrow match. Both Stanford and City of Hope have searched over 12 million prospective donors for a perfect match to no avail.
Thanks to Carol Gillespie from the Asian American Donor Program and the family and friends of Monique there will be several bone marrow drives in January. If you or anyone you know is Native American and German please consider being tested for Monique. The test is FREE and consists of a swab inside your mouth.
Bone Marrow Drive locations:
The American Italian Deli – 139 Main Street Los Altos 94022
Saturday, January 24, 2009 from 11:00AM – 3:00PM
Sunday, January 25, 2009 from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
*** Testing will take place inside The American Italian Deli. Also, the deli will be giving 20% of the weekend proceeds to the Larson family to help with the cost of the BMT search and transplant. Please stop by for a delicious lunch or snack!***
If you or anyone you know share the same heritage as Monique and are unable to attend the events but interested in being tested as a donor match please email Monique at Monique_Larson@yahoo.com.
If you are of any ethnic minority and would like to be tested please attend one of the bone marrow drive locations. The test is FREE. If you are not of an ethnic minority and would like to be tested the cost is $25.00.
If you are interested in donating to Monique’s cause you can send your contribution to Joan Mibach at St Simon Church 1860 Grant Road Los Altos, CA 94024. All donations are tax deductible. PLEASE BE SURE TO NOTE THAT YOUR DONATION IS FOR MONIQUE LARSON.
We are looking for volunteers to help at Monique Larson’s bone marrow drives. There are 2 hour shifts available. Please see the times below. If you are interested in working a shift, please contact bevbonovich@comcast.net Children in grades 5-8 are welcome to sign up. Please only show if you receive a confirmation email. I will fill the slots with the first responses.

Pennies for Peace
The 2nd grade Brownies would like your help. This year the girls are collecting pennies to donate to "Pennies for Peace," a nonprofit which raises money to help build schools in the poorest regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Pennies for Peace was born out of the bestselling novel Three Cups of Tea and is a way for school age children to make a difference by saving up and donating their pennies. The Brownies are asking all St. Simon children to bring pennies next week to the Wednesday Mass (January 28). Watch for the Brownies who will stand in the foyer and collect the pennies in their special buckets. For questions contact Kelly Walsh (Ghashghai).
