LEGO/Robotics Club:
Learn science, technology, engineering and mathematics through the fun and challenge of robotics! Develop higher order thinking skills such as planning and debugging, and collaboration skills, by working as part of a team to meet specific goals with a deadline. Robotics Club will be offered each term, throughout the school year. Students in grades 5-8 are welcome, regardless of prior experience; activities will follow a logical progression from Beginning in the fall through Intermediate in the winter to Advanced in the spring.
Assemble and program an autonomous robot using Lego Mindstorms. Build stock examples and download programs using the NXT-G graphical programming system. Build a “floor turtle” that draw geometric figures, a robotic “dog” that “heels,” a marble-sorting machine that recognizes colors, or a humanoid “walker.” Learn fundamentals of computer programming, including control flow, conditionals, loops and variables. Then, create new robots of your own design, exploring concepts from mechanics and mathematics! Students with more experience will move on to the greater expressive power of text-based programming with RobotC and more elaborate, metallic robots (Vex or Tetrix). Build: a “worker bot” that can pick up heavy objects, carry them to a destination, and drop them off; a “hybrid bot” that can obey both remote control (R/C) commands as well as following its own autonomous programming; or a “battle bot” smart enough to use sensors to avoid larger predators. Students attending multiple sessions may have an opportunity to show off their robots in a public setting or competition such as RoboGames, First Lego League or Maker Faire.
